Neutron activation analysis in an industrial setting: NAA at the Dow Chemical Company
- Dow Chemical USA, Midland, MI (United States)
In conjunction with X-ray fluorescence, atomic absorption, inductively coupled argon plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES), and X-ray diffraction, neutron activation analysis (NAA) provides critical analytical support for research and development projects within the Dow Chemical Company. The NAA group is part of the Global Dow Analytical Laboratory and operates a 300-kW Mark-I TRIGA nuclear reactor dedicated to conducting NAA. The group consists of four staff members, all of whom are U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission licensed reactor operators. NAA is an ideal elemental technique for a wide variety of Dow products. An incomplete list of materials analyzed includes catalysts, electronics materials, polystyrene and polyethylene, environmental samples (liquids and solids), chemicals, solvents, ceramics, pharmaceuticals, agricultural chemicals, and emulsion polymers. Our current sample load is {approximately}5500 sample/yr with an annual increase of {approximately}8% in the last few years.
