The Italian coal market is important, both due to its relative size and because of its expected growth. In 1982, Italy imported over 20 million metric tons of coal, ranking fourth in the world. Eight companies purchased 97% of the 1982 tonnage. The largest steam coal buyer is Enel, the state utility.
