(((C/sub 5/H/sub 5/)/sub 2/Y(..mu..-H))/sub 3/(..mu../sub 3/-H))(Li(THF)/sub 4/) (1) reacts with 1 equiv of CH/sub 3/OH at 0/sup 0/C to form (((C/sub 5/H/sub 5/)/sub 2/Y(..mu..-OCH/sub 3/))((C/sub 5/H/sub 5/)/sub 2/Y(..mu..-H))/sub 2/(..mu../sub 3/-H))(Li(THF)/sub 4/) (2) Reaction of 1 with 2 equiv of CH/sub 3/OH or 2 with 1 equiv of CH/sub 3/OH at 0/sup 0/C forms (((C/sub 5/)/sub 2/Y(..mu..-OCH/sub 3/))/sub 2/((C/sub 5/H/sub 5/)/sub 2/y(..mu..-H))(..mu../sub 3/-H))(Li(THF)/sub 4/) (3) (((C/sub 5/H/sub 5/)/sub 2/Y(..mu..-OCH/sub 3/))/sub 3/(..mu../sub 3/-H))(Li(THF)/sub 4/) (4) can be formed from 1-3 with the appropriate amount of CH/sub 3/OH at 0/sup 0/C. The central ..mu../sub 3/-H of these trimers does not react with CH/sub 3/OH. All trimetallic species were identified by elemental analysis, hydrolytic decomposition and /sup 1/H NMR spectroscopy. Crystallization of 4 from THF gives (((C/sub 5/H/sub 5/)/sub 2/Y(..mu..-OCH/sub 3/))/sub 3/(..mu..-H))/sub 2/(Li(THF)/sub 3/)/sub 2/ (5) in space group P2/sub 1//n with the following unit cell dimensions: a = 20.852 (9), b = 13.984 (5), c = 31.590 (9) A, ..beta.. = 92.48 (4)/sup 0/; V = 9203 (7) A/sup 3/, Z = 8; D/sub calcd/ = 1.81 g cm/sup -3/.
