Kinetics of the reaction of copper(I) and copper(II) ions with 2,5-dioxacyclohexyl free radicals and homolysis of the aqua-copper(II)-2,5-dioxacyclohexyl complex in aqueous solutions. Pulse radiolysis study. [Pulsed Electrons]

Pulse radiolysis and flash photolysis techniques were used to determine the specific rates of the ..beta..-elimination reaction of Cu/sup II-CH/sub 2/CR/sup 1/R/sup 2/OH/sup +/(aq) yields Cu/sup 2 +/(aq) + CH/sub 2/=CR/sup 1/R/sup 2/ + OH/sup -/. The higher rates noted for ..beta..-elimination were tenatively attributed to the tendency of copper(II)-carbon bonds toward hydrolysis. Studies also were carried out to determine whether copper(II) also induced cleavage of etheric bonds, and results indicted that even at pH 0.5 no cleavage of the ethenic bonds to ..beta..-elimination occurred. 25 references, 3 figures.
