Title: Sea level rise and wetlands loss in the US

Journal Article · · National Wetlands Newsletter; (United States)
OSTI ID:5521815

Studies are being conducted on the possible impacts on wetlands of a rise in sea level caused by increasing concentrations of CO/sub 2/. These impacts fall primarily into three categories: increased tidal flooding; wave-induced erosion; and salt intrusion. Many options are available to help wetlands adjust to rising sea level. Undeveloped barrier islands can be restored and marshes can be created or maintained artificially. Planners can attempt to ensure that wetlands have room to migrate landward in the future. Levees, river flow regulation, and other practices that alter sediment supply to wetlands can be modified to reduce adverse impacts.
