Electrode pitch is used extensively in the production of construction materials. Attempts to use other types of binders based on petroleum and shale residues have not been industrially developed. The scarcity of coal pitch is explained by the rapid rates of development of the industrial fields using it, particularly the electrode and aluminum industries. For several years the tar processing shop of the Yenakievo Coke Works has conducted investigations directed toward the adoption of a system for production of grades A, B or C electrode pitch meeting the specifications of GOST standard 10200-73. Two possibilities for pitch production were studied: (1) directly in the stills by partial collection of the anthracene fraction and (2) by oxidation with air injected into the still.
