Experience in isolation condenser performance gained by piper-one operation

Conference ·
OSTI ID:552135

PIPER-ONE apparatus is an Integral Test Facility simulating the thermalhydraulic behaviour of a Boiling Water Reactor (BWR); it was originally designed to address small break loss of coolant accident related phenomenologies. Following the interest toward advanced reactor technology in Italy, modifications were introduced in the facility making it suitable for reproducing relevant phenomena characterizing the operation of systems like Isolation Condenser of Simplified BWR. Large scale distortions could not be avoided in this research activity and should be considered when drawing conclusions. In the present paper, significant lessons learned from the execution of the experiments on Isolation Condenser performance and from the application of system codes, are summarized. 15 refs., 14 figs., 1 tab.
