The Japanese industrial sector has embarked on an extensive nationwide effort to reduce sulfur oxides and nitrogen oxides emissions to meet stringent environmental regulations. Described are operating commercial plants for hydrodesulfurization of heavy oil, flue gas desulfurization, and selective catalytic reduction of NOx. The effort to reduce ambient SOx concentrations has been successful. Recent efforts have been concentrated on NOx abatement. (6 graphs, 4 references)
