This volume contains papers presented by participants at a symposium on Evolutionary Perspectives and the New Genetics held at the University of Michigan, June 17 and 18, 1985, honoring Dr. James V. Neel on the occasion of his official retirement. Throughout his illustrious and productive career, Dr. Neel has always maintained a strong interest in evolution, readily apparent in his many publications dealing with mutation rates, population genetics, and more directly with human evolution. It was therefore, appropriate that a conference held in his honor should summarize some of the recent developments in molecular and population genetics, in the hope that they might serve to shed light on the complex mechanisms underlying the patterns of organismal evolution. Toward that end, we are pleased that a number of distinguished scientists agreed to present the results of their recent research.
