Continuous wave medium frequency signal transmission survey procedure for imaging structure in coal seams

Patent ·
OSTI ID:5518761
A method for detecting geological anomalies in underground coal seam formations is described which consists of: placing an FM transmitter having continuous wave transmit capabilities in a medium frequency range of between approximately 300 KHz to approximately 800 KHz about a coal seam to be analyzed, the transmitter including a tuned-loop antenna for propagation through the seam; placing a medium frequency FM receiver having continuous wave receive capability and including a tuned-loop antenna about the seam remote from the position of the transmitter with the seam intermediate to the transmitter and receiver, the tuned-loop antennas of the receiver and transmitter being positioned to be vertical to the seam, the receiver further including measuring and recording means for measuring and recording characteristics of the received waves propagated through the seam; exposing the seam to transmissions of continuous wave medium frequency waves with an azimuthal magnetic field component propagated horizontally through the seam from the transmitter towards the receiver; measuring signal transmission characteristics through the seam; generating a number of data points by locating both the transmitter and receiver at several points about the seam such that for each transmitter location the receiver is placed at preselected points about the seam; calculating expected signal transmission characteristics through the seam; and comparing the calculated signal transmission characteristics with the measured signal transmission characteristics and generating a graphical representation of the formation therefrom.
