Contract No. EF-77-C-01-2542 between Conoco Inc. and the US Department of Energy requires Conoco Inc. to design, construct, and operate a demonstration plant for the manufacture of high-Btu gas from bituminous coal. The project is currently in the design phase. The main accomplishments during the past year were: the preliminary design and economic evaluation of a commercial plant based on the process to be demonstrated was completed and fully reported; the design of the Demonstration Plant was restarted in March 1979 following a DOE stipulated delay of 14 months; the site data - topographic maps and soil analysis - for the proposed Demonstration Plant site in Noble County, Ohio, were obtained and reported; a majority of the environmental data required for EPA permits and preparation of the Environmental Impact Statement has been obtained; the technical support work required for the design of the Demonstration Plant was completed and reported; and the requisite process trade-off studies for selecting the process units to be included in the Demonstration Plant were completed and reported.
