In the present work, we have observed multiply charged atomic and molecular ions and a variety of positively charged cluster ions produced from complex molecular targets, CF[sub 4] and SF[sub 6] molecules, in gaseous and frozen phases and collisions with energetic Ar[sup 12,13+] and Xe[sup 31+] ions ([similar to]MeV/amu). Mass/charge spectra of atomic and molecular ions from frozen targets are found to be quite different from those of gaseous targets. For the first time, the parent molecular ions, CF[sub 4][sup +] and SF[sub 6][sup +], have been observed in the frozen gas experiments.
