In a method of igniting underground petroleum formations having a perforated liner in the well adjacent the formation, the basic steps include (1) packing the annular space between the exterior of the perforated liner and the well wall with a combustible material; (2) igniting the combustible material; and (3) injecting air through the perforations of the liner to burn the combustible material and to cause the ignition of the petroliferous material in the formation.
