We present secondary electron energy spectra of Ne[sup q+] (q=3,7,8,9,10), incident on a solid Pt(110) surface at different angles (10[degree]--90[degree]) with impact energies of 10 q keV. In the case of Ne[sup 10+] projectiles the filling of both K shell holes can be distringuished in the electron energy spectrum. It was found that the L shell is populated with 5 electrons during the first KLL Auger process (K[sup 2]LL) and that the L shell is almost filled during the second one (K[sup 1]LL). The index denotes the number of vacancies in the K shell. The I[sub K][sup 1][sub L[prime]L]/[ital I][sub K][sup 2][sub L[prime]L] intensity ratio varies as a function of the incidence angle and of the observation angle. Therefore, clear evidence is found for sub-surface KLL Auger electron emission. Furthermore, a variation of the incident charge state of the Ne projectile from 10 to 7 results in a shift of the LMM Auger maxima to lower energies, which is consistent with corresponding Hartree-Fock calculations.
