Effects of reflections and trapped ions on the thermionic emitter sheath

The effects of ion reflection by the double emitter sheath and trapped ions in the emitter double sheath under low current conditions are studied. The authors find that a number of conventional assumptions must be relaxed, and that the ''Bohm'' criterion must be generalized. In addition isothermal and non-isothermal calculations indicate that reflected ions and trapped ions increase arc-drop, while experimental devices show a substantial decrease in arc-drop in the ''low current plateau''.
