Tracing the causes of rig mishaps

Journal Article · · Offshore; (United States)
OSTI ID:5514841
In the 26-year history of US offshore drilling operations, 140 serious mishaps involving mobile drilling rigs have occurred. The major causes have been blowouts (31%), storms (24%), and fair weather towing incidents (22%). In 1980 alone, 22 major accidents took place, reflecting the large 1979-1980 increase (17%) in the mobile-rig fleet. Shortages of experienced personnel, operations in tougher geographical and geological locations, and a growing number of old rigs in use are factors contributing to the recent high rate of rig accidents.
