Cis-trans isomerization of olefinic compounds by photoinduced catalysis

A method is described of isomerizing a cis- or trans-olefinic compound or a mixture thereof by photoinduced catalysis to the photostationary state with respect to the ratio of the cis-isomer to the trans-isomer. The catalytic species is capable of catalyzing the isomerization is produced by the indirect photolysis of COS. The improvement described here consists of effecting the photolysis of COS in the presence of a photosensitizer for the production of the catalytic species. The photosensitizer consists of a compound capable of absorbing light of wavelengths above about 250 nm and thereafter collisionally dissociating COS to produce the catalytic species.
