High-resolution measurement of the infrared rotation-vibration spectrum of NH/sup -/

Conference · · AIP Conf. Proc.; (United States)
OSTI ID:5513767
An extensive series of measurements has been performed of the infrared spectrum of the X/sup 2/ ..pi.. electronic state of the molecular anion NH/sup -/. A coaxial ion beam/laser beam spectrometer is employed, in which fundamental rotation-vibration transitions are induced by a color-center laser operating near 3000 cm/sup -1/. The vibrationally excited ions autodetach, and the fast neutral NH is detected. Hyperfine structure (hfs) has been observed and analyzed in the P, Q, and R branches of /sup 14/NH/sup -/ and /sup 15/NH/sup -/. The hfs parameters are compared with atomic N and the isoelectronic neutral OH. This is the first analyzed case of hfs in any negative molecular ion.
