Book ·
OSTI ID:5512671
Energy required for water heating and space conditioning accounts for 75% of the energy demand of the typical California home and 25% of the nation's total energy demand. As fuel costs continue to rise, an increasing percentage of consumer income will be spent on these essentials. This document describes how solar water heating equipment can be used to lower the costs of household hot water. A well designed domestic water heating system can provide as much as 75% of the energy required for hot water depending upon the type and sophistication desired. The purpose of this guidebook is twofold: (1) to familiarize one with the operating characteristics of solar domestic water heating systems and (2) to explain how to purchase, operate and maintain a system. The different solar water heating systems currently available, how they are designed to meet individual family needs, and how to evaluate their performance are described. The steps to take in purchasing and installing a solar water heater are covered. Important points to follow on system operation and maintenance are included to help assure years of trouble free service.
