Determination of the parameters of inelastic resonances and of the background

Determination of the masses and widths of resonances and of the parameters of the background is studied. The matrix parametrizations (M and K matrices and the N/D method) are compared with the parametrization in terms of the sum of an inelastic resonant term and a background amplitude. It is shown that in the matrix parametrizations the inelastic background is determined unambiguously and cannot be inserted by hand. The formalism is applied to the analysis of p-wave ..pi pi.. scattering. The question of the existence of the rho'(1520) meson is discussed. It is shown that the inclusion of the background leads to a good description of the ..pi pi.. scattering data with GAMMA/sub rhoprimepipi//GAMMA0..omega..roughly-equal0.15. The amplitudes obtained are used for the analysis of the pion form factor and of the form factor for the transition ..gamma --> pi../sup 0/..omega...
