Intensity ratios of fine-structure components of resonance lines of hydrogen-like ions in the plasma of the solar corona

The intensity ratio of the fine-structure components of the L..cap alpha.. line, kappa=I(1s/sub 1/2/-2p/sub 1/2/)/I(1s/sub 1/2/-2p/sub 3/2/), as a function of the proton density is calculated for the hydrogen-like ions O VIII, Ne X, Mg XII, Si XIV, S XVI, Ca XX, and Fe XXVI, which are abundant in the solar corona. The quantity kappa is sensitive to the variation in the proton density in the range from 10/sup 11/ cm/sup -3/ (for O VIII) to 10/sup 17/ cm/sup -3/ (for Fe XXVI).
