An editorial discusses the public health concerns that must be considered after an accident like the Bhopal chemical plant disaster in India. The author wonders what lessons can be learned to better prepare ourselves for similar events that might occur in the future. The information that is usually most interesting relates to mortality and morbidity, exposure, and environmental damage. The author concludes that the information available today, 6 years after the event, is not profoundly different from that available in the first weeks after the gas leak. He closes the editorial with a strong emphasis on the importance of prevention of such accidents.
