Interaction of alloys of the magnesium-lanthanum system with hydrogen

The present paper contains the results of experimental investigations of the hydrogenation of alloys of the magnesium-lanthanum system. They may be useful in the search for magnesium-rich compositions possessing good kinetics of hydrogen absorption under mild conditions. The fact that metallic magnesium contained in the mixture with lanthanum dihydride after hydrogen desorption is capable of being hydrogenated at room temperature and low hydrogen pressures changes the accepted picture of the kinetics of the reaction of magnesium with hydrogen and opens broad vistas in the search for new methods of synthesizing magnesium hydride. The authors suggest that the reaction of magnesium with hydrogen is catalyzed by trace admixtures of lanthanum hydride formed during hydrogenolysis.
