The paper describes a simply constructed, brushless, commutatorless A.C. motor that exhibits significant improvements over conventional induction or synchronous motors. It can be designed so that its speed can be precisely and readily varied and to operate with A.C. current of any reasonable frequency and at a wide range of voltages. It is basically a synchronous motor that can operate at speeds well above and below ''normal speed'' synchronous conditions. When operated as a constant speed machine its efficiency is very good, giving this technology the potential of reducing electrical energy consumption in the U.S. by 3 to 4 percent. The motor uses a technique whereby a magnetizable layer on the surface of the rotor can be continuously remagnetized while the machine is operating. A 25 HP motor for use with high inertia loads has been developed. It is discussed in depth with its application. An operating design is presented.
