The increasing interest in the synthesis and chemistry of bimetallic bridged methylene complexes stems from the demonstrated or proposed involvement of these and related species in carbon monoxide reduction chemistry, olefin metathesis reactions, alkyne polymerizations, and methylene transfer reactions. In this communication, we report the synthesis of the new iron complex Cp/sub 2/Fe/sub 2/(CO)/sub 2/(..mu..-CO)(..mu..-CH/sub 2/)(1)(Cp=/sub n//sup 5/-C/sub 5/H/sub 5/)and the facile conversion of 1 to the cationic bridging methyl and bridging methylidyne complexes (Cp/sub 2/Fe/sub 2/(CO)/sub 2/(..mu..-CO)(..mu..-CH/sub 3/))/sup +/ (2) and (Cp/sub 2/Fe/sub 2/(CO)/sub 2/(..mu..-CO)(..mu..-CH))/sup +/ (3). The reactions of compounds 1, 2, and 3 provide an additional example of the stepwise interconversion of ..mu..-CH/sub 3/, ..mu..-CH/sub 2/, and ..mu..-CH ligands.
