Investigation of the shear Alfven continuum in nonaxisymmetric toroidal geometry in the low beta limit

The set of equations which determine the continuous spectrum of ideal magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) in nonaxisymmetric toroidal geometry is investigated in the low beta limit. It is shown that if the equilibrium pressure is neglected, a Sturm--Liouville equation with quasiperiodic coefficients characterizes the Alfven continuum. In addition, it is shown that the eigenvalues are real.
