The use of in-seam seismic surveys for the detection of faults, discontinuities and abandoned workings has been investigated by the USBM. Initial tests demonstrated the successful generation and propagation of higher order guided wave modes. Controlled-waveform source transducers and specialised detectors are useful for the preferential excitation and detection of Love and Rayleigh-type waves, including the higher frequency modes. The distinct observation of reflections using the transducers in the shear wave mode makes feasible the detection of the water-filled voids.
