Booster for relatively insensitive explosives

Patent ·
OSTI ID:5505896
Insensitive explosives, containing a high percentage of ammonium nitrate (NHD4UNOD3U) and containing nonexplosive organic sensitizers, have found wide application as blasting explosives. Prilled NHD4UNOD3U containing 94% NHD4UNOD3U and 6% fuel oil, and aqueous slurries of TNT-NHD4UNOD3U are examples of such insensitive explosives. The compositions are not detonable by blasting caps and prior art methods for detonating them include the use of dynamite or large quantities of fine-grained TNT primers. These methods are expensive, and very sensitive to heat and shock. This invention provides a booster for insensitive explosives which is consistently detonable by minimum content Primacord; which will be consistent in the wet or dry state; which will be inexpensive; and which is much less sensitive to heat, shock, impact, friction, and other influences causing accidental initiation. The booster comprises a compact core of Primacord-sensitive material, surrounded by a sheath of Primacord-insensitive material of high brisance, which is threaded on a Primacord fuse, lowered into the hole, and fired electrically.
