Excitation of isomeric states of the nuclei sup 167 Er, sup 179 Hf, and sup 183 W in (. gamma. ,. gamma. prime ) sup m reactions

Cross sections for excitation of the nuclear isomers {sup 167{ital m}}Er, {sup 179{ital m}}Hf, and {sup 184{ital m}}W in inelastic scattering of {gamma} rays have been determined. The measurements were made in the energy range 4--12 MeV with a step {Delta}{ital E}=0.5 MeV. At {ital E}=6 MeV an estimate of the isomeric ratios was made. The strong dependence of the magnitude of the ({gamma},{gamma}{prime}){sup {ital m}} reaction and the isomeric ratio on the difference of the ground-state spin {ital J}{sub {ital g}} and the isomeric-state spin {ital J}{sub {ital m}}, {Delta}{ital J}={vert bar}{ital J}{sub {ital g}}{minus}{ital J}{sub {ital m}}{vert bar}, is explained by a significant admixture of two-quantum transitions in the {gamma} cascade which populates the isomeric state.
