The sawtooth oscillations of the plasma density and the density decay upon the closure of the gas puffing valve in the Tuman-3 tokamak have been simulated mathematically. The existing density decay curves agree well with the curves calculated according to the Alcator scaling for the diffusion coefficient. The amplitude of the sawtooth oscillations yields a pinching velocity at the center of the plasma column which is close to the neoclassical value. In addition, an analytic solution has been found for the diffusion equation along with a kinetic equation for the distribution function of the neutrals in a model problem which describes the qualitative aspects of the particle balance in a tokamak.
