Effect of an electric field on the distribution of fast electrons

Analytic and numerical methods are used to study the behavior of the fast electron distribution in a plasma in a constant electric field weaker than the Dreicer field. It is shown that Coulomb collisions lead to substantial heating of the fast electrons, regardless of the velocity direction. A universal decay law is determined for the distribution for high electron velocities.
