The improvement of turbine efficiency is strongly demanded in view of achieving harmony with the Earth`s environment and saving the natural resources. Recently a 700 MW steam turbine was newly designed as the result of assiduous development to improve the efficiency. This paper describes the features of the newly designed 700 MW steam turbine which has incorporated several kinds of measured to achieve the high efficiency. The high temperature steam conditions of 24.1 MPa, 593/593 C is applied to this turbine which has the compact composition of High and Intermediate pressure opposite flow casing and two Low-Pressure casings (3 casings) compounded in tandem, operated at 3,600 rpm, and is utilizing 40 inches titanium alloy last stage blades. The cycle efficiency was improved by the increase of steam temperature up to 593 C. The turbine internal efficiency was increased by the application of the most suitable three dimensional flow pattern, the advanced nozzle configuration, the improved inlet hood and exhaust hood, new seal system and etc. This paper also includes the new steam path design based on the CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) analysis which can analyze three dimensional viscous flow. It was verified that the amount of the performance improvement was met to the design target. And the authors can not only apply this new design to 700 MW class turbine, but also the other class turbines.
