Intermediate states of the radiolysis products of polyethylene containing double bonds

Journal Article · · High Energy Chem. (Engl. Transl.); (United States)
OSTI ID:5499505
In the IR-absorption spectra of polyethylene, irradiated at 20 degrees K with fast electrons, having crystallites with straightened chains, bands are observed in the region of 880-950 cm/sup -1/, which disappear on heating the irradiated sample to 100-200 degrees K. The disappearance of these bands leads to an increase of intensity of the bands which are characteristic for vinyl and vinylidene bonds and also allyl radicals. These absorption bands are related to complexes of carbonium ions with double bonds and with allyl free radicals formed in the polyethylene during its irradiation.
