A review is presented of the current state and future prospects in the chemical sector. Soviet coking plants currently produce 114 different types and grades of chemicals and huge volumes of coke-oven gas used for ammonia synthesis and as a high-calorie fuel. The Soviet coking industry is the largest in the world. The chemical sector of the coking industry has been developed by gradually extending the scope of feedstock processing, so as to isolate wider ranges of chemical products and raise their quality levels. The production of commodities new to the coking industry, together with higher quality standards for the traditional range of products, meets the demand from vitally important sectors of the national economy, for the production of nitrogenous fertilizers and pesticides, new types of synthetic fibers and valuable special-purpose dyestuffs, caprolactam and ethylbenzene, atmosphere-resistant lacquers and plasticizers and substances used in nonferrous hydrometallurgy.
