Current state of research on the development of a single industrial-genetic classification for Soviet coals
A discussion of the choice of the best parameters for a unified industrial-genetic classification of Soviet coals, in which representatives of 16 organizations belonging to different ministries participated, resulted in the adoption of a resolution stating that it would be best to develop three separate classifications for brown coals, hard coals, and anthracites, proceeding from the same set of genetic parameters, i.e., vitrinite reflectance for subdivision into classes and the fuzinized-component content of clean coals for subdivision into types. It was recommended that the principal classification parameters for subdivision into statistical groups or grades be caking- and coking-capacity indices (the Roga index and plastic-layer thickness y). It was also suggested that the possibility of using an additional parameter for coals containing more than 15% leptynite be considered. Representatives of coal-chemistry institutes subordinate to the Minchermet SSSR, together with the UKhIN and VUKhIN, recommended that a classification be devised on the basis of a draft drawn up by a group of institutes in 1970, in which hard coals were subdivided into classes, groups, subgroups, and types in accordance with their volatile-matter content, plastic-layer thickness, Roga index (for poor-caking coals), vitrinite reflectance, and petrographic composition. Thus, two fundamentally different approaches to development of a unified industrial-genetic classification emerged. The main parameters used to subdivide coals into classes and types in the first approach are independent genetic indices (vitrinite reflectance and total fuzinized components). The institutes of the Minchermet SSSR believe that the main classification parameters should continue to be volatile-matter content and caking- and coking-capacity indices, with genetic parameters considered supplemental.
