Grand unification of preon models
We investigate several preon models within the context of grand unification. We use the value of ..cap alpha../sub s/ (i.e., ..lambda../sub MS/, where MS indicates the modified minimal-subtraction scheme) and the precolor scale M/sub PC/ as input into the renormalization-group equations, and calculate the value of sin/sup 2/theta/sub W/(M/sub W/) and the unification mass scale M/sub U/. As a consistency check we follow the precolor coupling constant down from M/sub U/ to M/sub PC/ to see where precolor becomes strong. The models which are consistent with present neutral-current data and proton-lifetime limits yield values of M/sub U/ somewhat larger than the standard SU(5) model. The unification group G is not constrained by the analysis. We consider both SU(N) and SO(N) as precolor groups and allow for two breaking patterns G..-->..SU(3)/sub C/ x SU(2)/sub L/ x U(1)/sub Y/ x precolor or the low right-handed mass-scale possibility G ..-->.. SU(3)/sub c/ x SU(2)/sub L/ x SU(2)/sub R/ x U(1)/sub B-L/ x precolor. Of the various SO(N) possibilities examined none are found to satisfy all the constraints.
