Dynamics of elastic scattering of heavy ions at large angles

The reaction /sup 16/O+/sup 28/Si at E/sub lab/ = 55 MeV is used as an example to show that the complex interference of the partial waves refracted by the nuclear attractive potential and reflected by the short-range repulsive core determines the dynamics of the elastic scattering of heavy ions at large angles. The same mechanism leads to the appearance of characteristic fluctuations in the scattering matrix in the vicinity of the orbital angular momentum of grazing collisions.
