Chevron Pipe Line Co. (CPL) improved its leak-detection capability by installing the pressure-point analysis (PPA) method as part of its scada system. The project's objective was to improve the software-based, leak- detection capability on two crude-oil pipelines in Texas. This paper presents a conceptual study with cost and performance data for various leak-detection options that was completed. A field test followed to confirm the performance expectations of PPA. Results from the field test prompted a decision to implement PPA. After installation and commissioning, field tests were repeated to measure the system's performance in operations. CPL is continuing to track PPA performance, refine the pipeline's procedures for investigating leak alarms, identify maintenance requirements, and investigate volume-balance leak detection.
