Simultaneous determination of arsenic(III) and arsenic(V) in metallurgical processing media by ion chromatography with electrochemical and conductivity detectors

As(III) and As(V) in metallurgical processing solutions are determined simultaneously by ion chromatography with electrochemical and conductivity detectors, respectively. The effects of acid, base, or alkali salts on the ion chromatograms obtained from low concentrations of As(III) are described. Cations such as Co(II), CU(II), Fe(II and III), and Ni(II) must be preseparated with an H/sup +/ cation exchanger to avoid precipitation of arsenic with the metal hydroxides formed during dilution. Na/sup +/ or K/sup +/ in the sample must be preseparated similarly because of their effects on the current response of the arsenite. The effect of H/sub 2/SO/sub 4/ on the current sensitivity of the arsenite was determined. The detection limits for arsenite in 0 and 5 mM H/sub 2/SO/sub 4/ are 0.005 and 0.025 mg/L As(III), respectively. The detection limit for arsenate is 0.022 mg/L As(V). As(III)/As(V) ratios as low as 0.025 can be determined quantitatively. 23 references, 7 figures, 4 tables.
