Apparatus and method for making and breaking joints in drill pipe strings
This patent describes a method of making and breaking threaded joints in strings of threadedly- connected pipe, the strings extending into an oil well. It comprises providing three jaw sets on a common frame, at least one of the jaw sets being fixed on the frame, at least one other of the jaw sets being mounted on the frame for pivotal movement relative thereto, disposing the frame and jaw sets at the wellhead of an oil well containing a string of threadedly-connected pipe sections, closing the one other jaw set on the string at a region beneath a joint thereof, so that the one other jaw set tends to be held against rotation by the string, closing the one jaw set on the string at a region above the joint thereof, effecting relative pivotal movement between the one other jaw set and the frame, thus causing the frame to pivot and accordingly causing the one jaw set to pivot, whereby to make or break the joint, and opening the one jaw set and the one other jaw set.
