The authors have studied the photoelectron spectroscopy of SO/sub 2//sup -/, S/sub 3//sup -/, and S/sub 2/O/sup -/ and found the following electron affinities: EA(SO)/sub 2/ = 1.107 +/- 0.008 eV, EA(S/sub 3/) = 2.093 +/- 0.025 eV, EA(S/sub 2/I) = 1.877 +/- 0.008 eV. The heats of formation of the negative ions were determined to be ..delta..H/sub f//sup 0//sub 298/(SO/sub 2//sup -/ = -98.0 +/- 0.2 kcal/mol,..delta..H/sub f//sup 0//sub 298/S/sub 3//sup -/) = -18.0 +- 0.6 kcal/mol, ..delta..H/sub f//sup 0//sub 298/(S/sub 2/O/sup -/) = 57.5 +/- 0.3 kcal/mol. From a Franck-Condon analysis of the photoelectron spectra, the authors obtained the following geometrical parameters: tau/sub s-0/(SO/sub 2//sup -/) = 1.523 +/- 0.020 A, ..cap alpha../sub o-s-o/(SO/sub 2//sup -/) = 115.6 =/- 2.0/sup 0/, tau/sub s-s/(S/sub 3/) = 1.90 +/- 0.05 A, r/sub s-s/(S/sub 2/O/sup -/) = 2.010 +/- 0.020 A.
