This paper describes the status of a research project directed toward nuclear power plant alarm prioritization. Criteria for modified alarm activation are being studied and developed. Also being developed are methods to regulate the alarm rate at some desired level. The problem of introducing alarm reduction techniques while maintaining complete alarm coverage during accidents is being addressed. The plant information needed to support the associated technical development areas is being compiled for a specific plant, categorized, and entered into a computer data base. A plan for a limited evaluation of some alarm reduction techniques on a plant simulator is being prepared.
