Dominance of {sup 1}{ital S}{sub {ital 0}} Proton-Pair Emission in the {sup 16}O({ital e,e{prime}pp}) Reaction

The reaction {sup 16}O({ital e,e{prime}pp}) has been studied at a transferred four-momentum ({omega},{vert_bar}{bold q}{vert_bar})=(210MeV,300MeV/c) . Evidence has been obtained for direct knockout of proton pairs from the 1{ital p} shell. The excitation-energy spectrum of the residual nucleus and the missing-momentum densities indicate that knockout of a {sup 1}S{sub 0} pair dominates the reaction, while there is also a noticeable contribution from knockout of {sup 3}P pairs. {copyright} {ital 1997} {ital The American Physical Society}
