Evidence for correlated double-electron capture in low-energy collisions of O/sup 6+/ with He

Journal Article · · Phys. Rev. Lett.; (United States)

Production of L-italicM-italicM-italic-Auger and L-italic/sub 1/L/sub 23/M-Coster-Kronig electrons in 60-keV O/sup 6+/+He and 40-keV C/sup 4+/+He collisions were measured with high resolution by the method of 0/sup 0/ Auger spectroscopy. Oxygen impact is found to create intense Coster-Kronig lines attributed to the configurations 1s-italic/sup 2/2pnl with n-italic> or =6 which are produced by double-electron capture. Strong evidence is provided that the double-capture process involves electron-correlation effects whose analysis leads beyond the independent-electron model.
