The rates of deactivation of iron-based Fischer-Tropsch catalysts are examined for correlations with partial pressures and to determine the cause(s) of deactivation. There is no correlation between either the partial pressure of water or the partial pressure ratio P{sub CO}/P{sub H2}{sup 2} and the deactivation rates. Transformation of the catalyst phase to iron oxide can be ruled out as causing deactivation. Sintering or carbon deposits cannot be conclusively identified from the results.
