Apart from hot metal, another high-quality product from the COREX plant is obtained: COREX export gas. On account of its composition and heat content, it can serve effectively and profitably for a wide range of purposes. As shown by the specific gas properties of the COREX export gas it is compatible to replace natural gas for the majority of in-plant uses, including power generation by combined cycle technology and Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) production. For the chemical industry this gas can serve as a feed stock of numerous applications. The utilization of COREX export gas for the additional production of DRI and an integrated combined COREX and DRI plant is the topic of this paper. This combination not only allows for a drastic reduction of energy consumption and production costs, but is also an outstanding example of a new generation of environmentally compatible technologies.
