Title: Physics of optical ring gyros; Proceedings of the Meeting, Snowbird, UT, January 7-10, 1984

Conference ·
OSTI ID:5495613

Aspects of laser gyro theory are discussed, taking into account basic ring laser gyro theory, the theory of multioscillator laser gyros, beat frequency locking in passive ring laser gyroscopes, the number-phase uncertainty relationship for a laser, and low frequency noise in ring laser gyros. Other subjects explored are related to locking compensation, novel configurations, and applications. Attention is given to the history of the laser gyro, an overview of passive optical gyros, lock-in growth in a ring laser gyro, damage effects identified by scatter evaluation of supersmooth surfaces, the reduction of beam coupling in a ring laser gyro by Doppler shifting of scattered light, laser gyro dither random noise, phase-conjugate ring gyros and photorefractive-biased ring gyros, the calibration of a large passive laser ring, a Josephson gyroscope using superfluids, a fiber ring resonator, optical activity and parity violation, and nonplanar gyros and magnetic biases.
