Mechanical properties of hot-pressed TiB2-ZrO2 composites

Journal Article · · J. Am. Ceram. Soc.; (United States)
OSTI ID:5495273
Experimentation with the use of monoclinic ZrO2 as an additive in TiB2-based composites, in order to improve mechanical properties without the use of stabilizers, has led to the identification of the TiB2 30 percent ZrO2 composition whose compacts exhibit low porosity, and 800 MN/sq m transverse rupture strength, and K(Ic) of 5 MPa m exp 1/2. It is speculated that the high strength and toughness obtained are primarily due to the presence of partially stabilized tetragonal ZrO2, as well as to a (TiZr)B2 solid solution which forms during sintering.
