The main objective of the work is to investigate the relationship between structure and reactivity of coal macerals and their extracts and residues produced from pyridine extraction. The structures of three maceral groups, vitrinite, exinite and fusinite, which were separated from a unique Pingshuo bituminous coal, had been characterized. The pyridine extraction extracts and residues of the macerals were prepared at room temperature (40 C). Nine samples, including three parent macerals and their corresponding extracts and residues, were then pyrolyzed and gasified in a CO{sub 2} atmosphere with Temperature Programmed Thermgravimetry. The pyrolysis and gasification behaviors of the maceral extracts and residues and the characterizations of heat effects related to pyrolysis and gasification were not only compared with the parent macerals but also compared with each other. The results are discussed in detail in terms of the structure information of the parent macerals, extracts and residues.
