International petroleum encyclopedia, Volume 12

Book ·
OSTI ID:5494743
The prospects of the future of the petroleum industry worldwide for the 1980's as to surplus, shortage, or transition is discussed in the first part of this encyclopedia. Findings of various studies on energy supply and demand - particularly petroleum, coal, and natural gas supplies - are quoted. It is cited that energy demand growth peaked at 5.5%/yr in the 1965 to 1973 period, slumped to a low of 0.7%/yr during 1973 to 1976, and has reached a level of 3.5%/yr during 1976 to 1980. A growth of 3.9%/yr is predicted to 1980. Most of the growth will come in non-communist countries other than the US, Japan, and Europe. A plateau in global oil production is predicted, and a period of transition to other types of energy to take up the undersupply is seen as inevitable. Various areas of the world are discussed in detail. Each discussion includes topics such as petroleum reserves, drilling and production, supply and demand relations, future course of the petroleum industry, etc. Detailed maps of the areas showing energy reserves, production facilities, etc. are included. Advertisements for companies closely associated with the petroleum industry are included. The volume is well indexed. (BLM)
